Educational opportunity. Community connection. A stronger future for Houston’s learners.
01
Our mission
To improve the academic achievement and career development opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and increase the economic potential of learners by providing engaging experiences through a variety of community, church and educational networks.
02
Our vision
KEW serves the northeast side of the greater Houston area with the belief that students whose needs have not been met by traditional schooling can achieve academic success at the postsecondary level.
Five goals that guide our work
01
Inspire students with high needs and students at risk who have limited exposure to rigorous academics and career and technical concepts.
02
Reduce disengagement in academic settings.
03
Reduce dropout rates and increase graduation rates.
04
Improve the quality and size of the future workforce.
05
Strengthen the local economy by mentoring and educating future visionaries and entrepreneurs who give back to their community.
Who we serve
KEW Learning Academy is a nonprofit organization focused on educational activities for middle and high school students at risk of dropping out, including students who are overage, face behavioral or justice-related challenges, or are disengaged from traditional schooling. Students may be referred by their home school, foster care group home, or community center, or live in Houston’s Fifth Ward.
Rooted in the Fifth Ward
KEW has provided enrichment and tutorial activities in the Fifth Ward community for several years. Its expansion plan identifies the proposed acquisition of property at 4705 Lyons Avenue to continue serving community youth. This is a planned location; contact the Academy to confirm current facilities and availability.
01
A continuum of opportunity
The Academy’s program vision connects academic, social, and personal development with career and technical education, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, to prepare learners for the 21st century workforce.
02
After-school learning & family partnerships
KEW’s planned after-school activities reinforce and complement regular instruction. Curriculum enrichment through student leadership organizations, clubs, and social events is paired with intentional parental participation and opportunities for family literacy and related educational development.
03
Skills for school, work & life
Program evaluation focuses on critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, information and technology literacy, flexibility, adaptability, innovation, creativity, global competence, and financial literacy. Stakeholders use these outcomes to examine whether students are developing the skills needed to succeed.
04
A culture of belonging and readiness
KEW’s approach uses varied models and strategies to build a positive learning culture and a sense of community among all stakeholders. The goal is to develop college-ready students who can meet the demands of postsecondary study and an increasingly knowledge-based workforce.
