What We Do

What We Do

Educational Enrichment Programs

Developing young leaders to value lifelong learning! The goal of our educational enrichment programs are to Illustrate through engaging educational experiences the “Engineering Design Process” to participants while identifying academic areas where the learners needs specific assistance.

After School & Summer Program

After School & Summer Program

KEW LEARNING ACADEMY E.S.T.E.A.A.M. Career and College Preparatory Girls After School & Summer Program

To increase the interest in girls engineering careers, KEW LEARNING ACADEMY provides connections between nontraditional subjects such as Interior/Fashion Design, Agriculture, Technology and Fine Arts with academic concepts to promote an interest in high level academic courses, career pathways and college readiness. This educational approach uses Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, Arts and Mathematics (STEAAM) as access points for guiding student’s inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.

Summer Program

Summer Program

Summer Programing (Engineering Camps)

KEW Learning Academy “Engineering Design Camp” is a non-traditional, but unique summer program for youth (males and females) ages 6 to 17, located in The Greater 5th Ward Community in the Greater Houston Area. We emphasize problem solving activities such as draw a diagram, trial and error, start at the end, working backwards, reasoning by analogy, algorithm (procedures/processes), insight, mental imagery, and many more problem-solving concepts. We believe in fun, adventure, safety, and great instruction.

Female Mentoring Programs

Female Mentoring Programs

(Summer/After School)

To increase the resilience and self-efficacy of girls, KEW LEARNING ACADEMY provides connections between nontraditional subjects such as Fashion Design, Technology and Arts with academic concepts in S.T.E.A.A.M. to promote an environment that challenges students and creates a love for learning while developing critical thinking skills. This educational approach allows the students to develop Learning and Innovation skills, Information, Media and Technology Skills and Life and Career skills.

This educational approach uses the above-mentioned concepts as access points for guiding student’s inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The overall goal of the program is for students to be thoughtful in risk taking, engaging in experiential learning, persistent in problem solving, embracing in collaboration, and diligent in working through the creative process. Therefore, to empower the girls to be fearless and confident in their capabilities the program is titled, I AMMM…ENRICHMENT AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM. Which stands for “I ASPIRE TO MOTIVATE MY MIND TO …”

The learning objectives for the after-school program are: • Utilize the Engineering Design Process to promote critical thinking skills, • Utilize integrated concepts to show connections between various disciplines to train the mind how to think, • Provide projects that emphasizes self-reliance and a love of discovery and learning, • Recognize various technologies used in the fashion industries; and • Increase knowledge to make informed decisions and promote healthy lifestyles.

Therefore, the Engineering Design process involves: ASK the right questions, IMAGINE how to solve them, PLAN out each and every move, CREATE a solution to the problem, then see what works and then IMPROVE is the framework for instruction.

Our primary focus is working with the average student (C’s and D’s) to increase their interest in non-traditional engineering careers. These courses were chosen because they are based in the female’s social experiences. Social trends in fashion and food technology are used to engage students in meaningful conversations that lead to project-based learning to get them interested in academic concepts to increase their problem-solving capabilities.

“The social experiences of teenagers can be a bridge to contextualizing content and instruction in a science classroom. The opportunity to bear out the students' curiosities about their environment and the world exist when the curriculum in its design departs from the norm of using Standards only. This departure helps to drive new approaches to content and instruction. Metaphors and analogies that bespeak the real events in students' lives can promote discourse and understanding that traditional instructions miss. Social trends that manifest in clothing, dress, hairstyle, and grooming do serve as a springboard to engage students in the dialogue of science with a social lens.” YALE NATIONAL INITITIVE

Career Development/Job Readiness Workshops

Career Development/Job Readiness Workshops

Our primary focus is to introduce the learner to the 16 Career Clusters. The learner participates in Career Awareness and Career Exploration activities that provides the learner strategic information preparing them for secondary and postsecondary opportunities which leads to meaningful work and active citizenship. Job readiness workshops provide the learner the skills needed to find and retain employment. Some topics include time management, conflict resolution, resume building, interview techniques, soft skills development etc.

These workshops/classes/seminars provide opportunities for learners to understand how to process information, think critically, solve problems, use information, communicate, innovate, and collaborate utilizing scientific, technological, engineering, and mathematical skills. Thus, providing a foundation for them to participate in high skill, high wage employment opportunities as an adult.

Frequently asked questions

KEW Learning Academy’s overall goal is for learners to be thoughtful in risk taking, engaging in experiential learning, persistent in problem solving, embracing in collaboration, and diligent in working through the creative process.   We accomplish our goal by teaching problem solving activities and introducing the learner the Engineering Design Process.  The design process helps learners think creatively about a problem and produce successful results.   The Engineering Design process is the framework for instruction and is a great way to tackle almost any task.

KEW Learning Academy believes that when integrating basic academic concepts with career and technical education studies learners become engaged in the teaching and learning process and understand the relevance in learning essential educational concepts.  This concept provides a framework for teaching 21st century outcomes that are identified in four overall categories:

1) Integrated Instruction (core academic with career and technical education instruction);

2) Learning and Innovative Skills,

3) Information, Media and Technology Skills and

4) Life and Career Skills.

The 21st Century Skills outcomes requires a workforce that are critical thinkers, problem solvers, good communicators, good collaborators, information and technology literate, flexible and adaptable, innovative and creative, globally competent, and financially literate. Therefore, KEW Learning Academy will consistently ask these questions as an evaluative tool by all stakeholders to ensure that the learner has the skills needed to succeed in work, school and life.

We believe learners need a warm supportive environment to learn and grow. The educational enrichments workshops/classes/seminars provide learners opportunities to achieve academic and workforce successes while meeting the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive needs of each learner as an individual
